September 5th, 2023
Today marks the second anniversary of Fahim Dashty’s martyrdom who was killed by the Taliban terrorist group in Panjshir province. He was a well-known journalist, writer and civil right activist of Afghanistan. He dedicated his entire life to the pursuit of peace and democracy in Afghanistan, steadfastly refusing government positions in order to maintain his commitment. Throughout his lifetime, he unwaveringly championed the vital principles of freedom of speech and press, leaving an indelible mark on Afghanistan’s journey towards these ideals.
Over the past two decades, Dashty made significant contributions to the promotion of media freedom, journalists’ rights, access to information and freedom of expression. He served as the Editor-in-Chief of Kabul Weekly, which stood as one of Afghanistan’s most reliable newspapers. Additionally, he held the positions of Chairperson of the Afghanistan National Journalists Union, Deputy Chairperson of the Access to Information Commission, and was a prominent advocate for these important causes.
Dashty harbored a vision of a tranquil and flourishing Afghanistan. Although his passing prevented him from continuing the fight to witness this dreams but he succeeded in inspiring a generation of young journalists who are presently in the midst of their courageous struggle against the oppressive Taliban regime. They persist in nurturing the dream of a developed and harmonious Afghanistan. Dashty was one of the principal advocates for the Access to Information Law in Afghanistan. Together with his team of advocates, he successfully navigated the passage of this crucial legislation through the country’s parliament and secured the approval of the president of Afghanistan. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Mass Media Law and the Regulation of Private Media Outlets Activity.
Now, two years after the passing of Dashty, the people of Afghanistan, particularly the women, find themselves stripped of their civil rights. Domestic media is under strict censorship by the Taliban, and freedom of speech is nonexistent. The Taliban has been responsible for the deaths and imprisonment of numerous journalists. They continue to flagrantly violate human rights in Afghanistan, and the international community observes this situation with disturbing silence. The Taliban persistently violate fundamental human rights in Afghanistan, and the actions documented by UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett are a stark illustration of these human rights abuses committed by the terrorist group.
The Dashti Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the ideals and aspirations of Afghanistan’s brave journalists, following in the path laid out by Fahim Dashty. We will tirelessly advocate for the rights of oppressed reporters, regardless of their gender, and work towards a more just and informed Afghanistan. The enduring legacy of Dashty will forever hold a significant place in the history of Afghanistan. The people of Afghanistan and journalists will eternally cherish the memory of Dashty and the unwavering commitment he displayed in his struggles.
