Message from Canadian Journalists for Free Expression

September 4, 2022

Dear Madame Sayara Dashty, Marwa, Edris, Yousef, and the esteem guests,

CJFE was deeply saddened when heard about the killing of the well-known journalist late Fahim Dashty.

Today CJFE joined you in solidarity and to honour Fahim Dashty’s life and work as a courageous journalist and organizer who have worked hard and stood up for the rights of his fellow journalists in Afghanistan.

CJFE was formed in 1981. During its history, CJFE tirelessly supported journalists around the world by helping them financially and training, from Asia, Latin America to Africa. CJFE also defends free expression and is a founding member of IFEX International Clearing House. IFEX now has more than one hundred network around the world working on freedom of expression. You can visit CJFE on google by www.cjfe.org.

According to CPJ (Committee Protecting Journalists) so far in this year alone 48 journalists have lost their lives in their professional duty either in cross fire, dangerous assignments or murder. All these journalists had one things in common to bring the truth in their report to the people around the world.

Mexico remains the most dangerous place to report with eight killed, next to Mexico is Ukraine with seven journalists killed.

Our world is a dangerous place not only for journalists and human rights advocates, but also for writers and cultural workers. Because of this, we need to be in solidarity more than ever to protect the human rights of all as established in charter of rights and freedom.

As you Madame Dashty brought in your invitation letter, yes Afghanistan will rise again from the situation it is today. A day that all journalists and NGO’s together with the people of Afghanistan will celebrate the life of Dashty and all journalist and human rights defenders who have put their lives for their country.

In solidarity and thank you all.

On behalf of CJFE
